Quick and easy French toast sticks made in an air fryer for a crispy outside and tender inside, ready in just 6 minutes. Perfect for busy mornings or last-minute breakfast cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46 slices sturdy white or brioche bread (day-old bread works best)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ½ cup (120 ml) whole milk or preferred dairy/non-dairy alternative (almond or oat milk)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar or brown sugar (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted (optional)
  • Cinnamon sugar topping: 2 tablespoons sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut 4-6 slices of bread into sticks roughly ¾ inch (2 cm) wide. Using slightly stale bread helps them hold up better during dipping and cooking. (5 minutes)
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 large eggs, ½ cup (120 ml) milk, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon sugar, and a pinch of salt until smooth and well combined. (3 minutes)
  3. One by one, dip the bread sticks in the batter, allowing excess to drip off. Coat evenly but don’t soak too long or they’ll get soggy. (5 minutes)
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with non-stick oil spray or brush with melted butter to prevent sticking.
  5. Place the coated sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Don’t overcrowd; cook batches if needed. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes, then flip sticks carefully with tongs or spatula and air fry for another 3 minutes until golden brown and crispy. (6 minutes total)
  6. If using, immediately sprinkle the warm sticks with the cinnamon sugar mixture for that irresistible sweet crunch.
  7. Serve warm with your favorite syrup, fresh fruit, or a dusting of powdered sugar (optional).

Notes

Use slightly stale or day-old bread for best sturdiness. Do not soak bread sticks too long in batter to avoid sogginess. Preheat air fryer for even cooking and crispiness. Lightly spray or brush air fryer basket with oil or butter to prevent sticking. Adjust cooking time by 30-second increments if needed for desired crispness. Cinnamon sugar topping is optional but highly recommended for extra crunch and flavor. For dairy-free or vegan versions, substitute eggs with flax egg and use plant-based milk and butter.
