A quick and adorable ham and cheese bento lunch box that turns a simple sandwich into a fun, kid-friendly meal. Perfect for school lunches, this recipe uses simple ingredients and takes less than 15 minutes to assemble.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 to 6 thin slices of deli ham (honey ham or black forest ham preferred)
  • 4 to 6 thin slices of cheese (cheddar, provolone, or Swiss)
  • 2 slices of soft bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced into rounds (English cucumber preferred)
  • 4 to 6 cherry tomatoes, halved or whole
  • 1/2 cup baby carrots or carrot sticks
  • 1/2 cup fresh fruit (berries, grapes, or apple slices)
  • Optional: small treat (dark chocolate chips, mini rice cake, or small cookie)

Instructions

  1. Prep your workspace: Wash your hands and clean your cutting board. Gather all ingredients and equipment.
  2. Spread the bread: Take two slices of bread and spread a thin layer of softened butter or cream cheese on one side of each slice.
  3. Layer the ham and cheese: Place 2 to 3 slices of ham on one slice of bread, followed by 2 to 3 slices of cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, spread side down. Press gently.
  4. Cut into shapes: Use cookie cutters to press firmly through the sandwich to get 2 to 3 shapes. Save scraps for a snack or compost.
  5. Prepare the vegetables: Slice cucumber into 1/4-inch rounds. Leave baby carrots whole or cut in half lengthwise. Halve cherry tomatoes for younger kids.
  6. Add the fruit: Rinse berries or grapes and pat dry with a paper towel. If using apple slices, toss in lemon juice to prevent browning.
  7. Assemble the bento box: Place ham and cheese shapes in the largest compartment. Arrange veggies and fruit in other compartments. Tuck in a small treat if using.
  8. Add finishing touches: Optional – use a toothpick to add faces to the ham and cheese shapes with cream cheese dots and red bell pepper strips.
  9. Seal and store: Close the bento box tightly. Refrigerate until ready to use. Stays fresh up to 4 hours at room temperature.

Notes

For best texture, assemble no more than 12 hours before serving. Keep sandwich shapes separate from wet ingredients if prepping night before. Use slightly stale bread for better shape-holding. Cold ham and cheese are easier to cut cleanly. Pat all fruits and vegetables dry to prevent sogginess.
