A quick and festive patriotic flag cake made with a boxed mix, fresh berries, and vanilla frosting, perfect for 4th of July celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box white or yellow cake mix (e.g., Betty Crocker)
  • Ingredients called for on the box (usually water, vegetable oil, and 3 large eggs, room temperature)
  • 1 tub (about 16 oz) vanilla frosting (store-bought or homemade; cream cheese frosting recommended for slight tang)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced (for the red stripes)
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (for the blue field)
  • 1 cup white blueberries or white grapes, halved (for the white stripes; or extra frosting if unavailable)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature indicated on the cake mix box (usually 350°F / 175°C). Grease your 9×13-inch pan well.
  2. Prepare the cake batter according to the package instructions. Combine the cake mix with water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  3. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles.
  4. Bake the cake for the time specified on the box, usually 30-35 minutes. Check doneness by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  5. Cool the cake completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 45 minutes. Do not frost while warm.
  6. Wash and dry the strawberries and blueberries thoroughly. Slice the strawberries thinly for neat red stripes.
  7. Frost the cake evenly with vanilla or cream cheese frosting using a spatula, aiming for a smooth, even layer about 1/4 inch thick.
  8. Arrange the berries on the cake to form the flag design: place a rectangle of blueberries in the top-left corner for the blue field; create alternating stripes of sliced strawberries and white blueberries or extra frosting horizontally across the cake.
  9. Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to let everything set.

Notes

Cool the cake completely before frosting to prevent melting. Use fresh, firm berries for best results. Thinly slice strawberries for neat stripes. Refrigerate cake after decorating to set frosting and berries. For gluten-free, use gluten-free cake mix and frosting. For dairy-free, use coconut-based frosting or glaze. Frozen berries can be used but thaw and pat dry to avoid sogginess.
