Ingredients

Scale
  • 64 ounces (1.9 liters) apple cider
  • 1 cup (240 ml) cinnamon whiskey (e.g., Fireball)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 1 large orange, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) maple syrup or honey (optional)
  • Fresh apple slices (for garnish, optional)
  • Extra cinnamon sticks (for garnish, optional)
  • Star anise pods (for garnish, optional)
  • Whipped cream or cinnamon whipped cream (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Plug in your slow cooker and set it to low. If short on time, start on high for the first hour, then switch to warm.
  2. Combine the cider and spices: Pour the entire 64 ounces of apple cider into the slow cooker. Add the 4 cinnamon sticks, 6 whole cloves, and 3 star anise pods.
  3. Add the orange slices: Slice the orange into thin rounds (about 8-10 slices) and gently drop them into the cider.
  4. Stir and heat: Give everything a gentle stir, put the lid on, and let it cook on low for 2 to 3 hours until hot and infused.
  5. Add the whiskey: About 15 minutes before serving, pour in the 1 cup of cinnamon whiskey and stir gently. Let it heat through for the last 15 minutes.
  6. Taste and adjust: Taste the cider and add maple syrup or honey if needed for sweetness. Adjust whiskey strength to preference.
  7. Serve: Ladle the warm cider into mugs. Garnish with orange slices, spices, fresh apple slices, or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the whiskey and add an extra cinnamon stick, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon maple syrup. To make ahead, combine cider and spices in the slow cooker insert and refrigerate overnight; then heat and add whiskey before serving. For a deeper flavor, toast the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise in a dry skillet for 1 minute before adding. If the cider becomes too strong or sweet, thin with a little water or extra apple cider.
