These easy turkey and cheese pinwheel lunchbox wraps are fun to eat, don’t get soggy, and kids actually finish them. They take maybe ten minutes to put together and can be customized however you want.

Ingredients

  • Large flour tortillas (10-inch size works best for rolling; burrito-sized is even better)
  • Cream cheese, softened to room temperature (use full-fat for best texture, or dairy-free if needed)
  • Sliced deli turkey (I prefer oven-roasted or smoked for extra flavor; about 4-5 slices per wrap)
  • Sliced cheese (provolone, cheddar, or Swiss all work great; I like provolone for its mild flavor)
  • Shredded lettuce (optional, but adds a nice crunch; pat it dry with paper towels first to prevent sogginess)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese. Take your cream cheese out of the fridge about 15-20 minutes before you start. You want it soft enough to spread like butter, not cold and stiff. If you forgot to take it out, microwave it for 10 seconds on low power.
  2. Lay out your tortilla. Place one tortilla flat on your cutting board. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. If your tortilla has a slightly dry edge, don’t worryโ€”it’ll soften as it sits with the cream cheese.
  3. Spread the cream cheese. Using your butter knife or offset spatula, spread a thin, even layer of cream cheese over the entire surface of the tortilla. Go all the way to the edgesโ€”this acts as glue to hold everything together. Don’t use too much, or it’ll squeeze out when you roll. About 2 tablespoons per tortilla is perfect.
  4. Layer the turkey. Place 4-5 slices of turkey evenly over the cream cheese. Overlap them slightly so there are no gaps. If you’re using larger slices, you might only need 3. The goal is even coverage without clumping.
  5. Add the cheese. Lay your sliced cheese on top of the turkey. If you’re using provolone, one slice per wrap is usually enough. For cheddar, I sometimes use two thinner slices. Make sure the cheese covers most of the turkey.
  6. Add any extras. If you’re using lettuce, sprinkle it in a thin line down the center of the tortilla. Don’t put it all overโ€”just in the middle. This prevents the lettuce from making the wrap too bulky and hard to roll.
  7. Roll it up tight. Starting from one edge, roll the tortilla tightly toward the other end. Use your fingers to keep the filling tucked in as you go. Think of it like rolling a sleeping bagโ€”firm and even pressure. When you reach the end, press gently to seal the edge.
  8. Wrap in plastic. Place the rolled tortilla seam-side down on a piece of plastic wrap. Wrap it tightly, twisting the ends like a candy wrapper. This keeps the roll compressed so it holds its shape. Repeat with remaining tortillas.
  9. Chill for 30 minutes. Place the wrapped rolls on a baking sheet or plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This is the most important stepโ€”don’t skip it! The chilling firms up the cream cheese and makes slicing so much easier.
  10. Slice into pinwheels. After chilling, unwrap each roll and place it on your cutting board. Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 1-inch pieces. Use a gentle sawing motion rather than pressing straight down. You should get about 6-8 pinwheels per wrap, depending on the size of your tortilla.

Notes

Don’t overstuff the wraps. Warm tortillas roll better. Pat lettuce dry to prevent sogginess. Use a serrated knife for clean cuts. Chill for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Can be made the night before for best results.
