A potent and flavorful immune-boosting shot made with fresh ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, and honey. This easy recipe is perfect for cold season and can be customized to your preferred spice level.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger root, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh turmeric root, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
  • 1/4 cup raw honey (or more to taste)
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 2 lemons)
  • 45 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 1/2 small onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 small jalapeño or habanero pepper, sliced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, whole or cracked
  • Optional: fresh rosemary sprig, horseradish slices, or cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. Wash and scrub the ginger and turmeric roots thoroughly. Slice them into thin rounds (about 1/8 inch thick). Smash the garlic cloves with the flat side of a knife. Roughly chop the onion. Slice the jalapeño if using.
  2. Layer the ginger, turmeric, garlic, onion, pepper, and black peppercorns in a clean 32-ounce glass jar. Pack them in tightly.
  3. Pour the raw apple cider vinegar over the solids, ensuring everything is completely submerged. Press down with a spoon to release air bubbles. Leave about 1 inch of headspace.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and shake well. Store in a cool, dark place (like a kitchen cabinet) for 2 to 4 weeks. Shake gently every day or two.
  5. After steeping, strain the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bowl. Press down on the solids to extract all liquid. Discard the solids.
  6. Stir in the raw honey and fresh lemon juice while the mixture is at room temperature. Taste and adjust sweetness or tanginess as desired.
  7. Use a funnel to pour the finished fire cider into dark glass bottles or a clean jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

Notes

Don’t skip the black pepper—it increases turmeric absorption by up to 2,000%. Use fresh roots for best flavor. Turmeric stains surfaces, so wear an apron and use a dedicated cutting board. The longer the steeping time (up to 4 weeks), the more potent the flavor. Shake the bottle before each use as honey may settle.
